Worked with John Smeaton on canals in Yorkshire and elsewhere. Co-founded the Butterley Iron Works in 1790, manufactured fish-bellied cast iron rails which marked great advance in railway track technology. Chief engineer on construction of Grand Junction Canal. Worked on the docks on the Avon and the Thames.
