- Favourite Briton.

Born in Dalton-in-Furness, Cumbria
Born on 26th of December 1734
Died on 15th of November 1802

Romney began his working life as a cabinet-maker, before in 1757 being articled to a Kendal painter in his twenties to learn that skill. A fine if florid portrait painter he worked in London from 1762 until 1798, when he returned to his native county. His style appealed to the great and the good of his day, and he left a legacy of portraits of many leading figures.
