Born 1920 - Scottish poet and critic.

Educated at Glasgow University. Served in Royal Army Medical Corps in WWII. Published first volume of poetry The Vision of Cathkin Braes in 1952. Later works included A Second Life (1968) and Crossing The Border (1990). Translated various writers including Boris Pasternak and Alexander Puskhin. Became Glasgow’s Poet Laureate in 1999, awarded Queen’s Medal for Poetry in 2000.
