1561 - 1626. English philosopher & statesmen.

Became an MP in 1584. Knighted by James in 1603, supported union of England and Scotland. Held many positions including Solicitor-General, Lord Keeper and Lord Chancellor in 1618. Created viscount in 1621. Accused of accepting bribes he was imprisoned and banished from parliament. Wrote essays, prose, historical and legal works, prayers and verse translations. Died in debt, buried in St Michael’s Church, St Albans.
