Trained at RADA. Made London stage debut in Julius Caesar in 1964. Member of National Theatre Company (1965-73). Appeared in a number television programmes including Jennie, Lady Randolph Churchill (1974) as Randolph Churchill and Orwell on Jura (1983) as George Orwell. Films include The Day of the Jackal (1973), The Thirty-Nine Steps (1978) and The Mission (1986).
