Began writing while recovering from tuberculosis. First novel Saturday Night and Sunday Morning (1960) achieved major success. Other writing included The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner (1959), Key to the Door (1962) and Leonard’s War (1991). Also written plays and screenplays from his novels, poems, children’s books and an autobiography.
