Born 1740. Died 1795 - Scottish editor, printer and antiquary.

Set up printing business with Andrew Bell and Colin MacFarquhar in 1765. Produced the first edition of Encyclopaedia Britannica (1768-71). Founder member of Society of Antiquities in 1780. Printed first edition of Robert Burns’s poem.
