Born 1918 -Died 2006 Scottish novelist, short story writer and poet.
Lived for a time in Central Africa. Won short story competition in 1951 with The Seraph and the Zambesi. Converted to Roman Catholicism. Achieved public success with sixth novel The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie (1961). Later novels included The Abbess of Crewe (1974) and A Far Cry from Kensington (1988). Written critical works on the Brontes and Wordsworth. Created DBE in 1993.
