Journalist and airline pilot before becoming MP for Epping in 1970. Brought into Cabinet of Margaret Thatcher as Employment Secretary in 1981. Injured in IRA bombing of Grand Hotel, Brighton in 1984. Appointed Conservative Party Chairman in 1985. Retired to backbenches after 1987 general election victory. Made a life peer in 1992.
