Educated at Edinburgh University and Cambridge. Analysed lime, demonstrated that diamond is a form of carbon. Established partnership to produce platinum equipment for chemical research and industry. Discovered two elements, iridium and osmium. Elected FRS in 1785. Died in a riding accident.
