Studied at Glasgow University. Wrote doctorates on the chemistry of bile and natural pigments. Researched into the chemistry of natural products. Awarded Nobel Prize for chemistry in 1957 for work on structure and synthesis of nucleotides. Elected FRS in 1942, knighted in 1954.
