Born c1494. Died 1536 - English translator of the Bible.

Began work on the translation of the New Testament into English in Hamburg in 1524. Fled to Worms where the translation was printed. Received very hostile reception from Church. Began translation of the Old Testament. In 1530 wrote The Practice of Prelates, opposed to Henry VIII's divorce. Arrested in Antwerp in 1535. Tried on a charge of heresy in 1536, strangled before being burnt at the stake.
