Excellent stay and wonderful value for money. We chose the booze n snooze option at £95 midweek rate and the value was exceptional. It was possible to choose anything from the menu, no supplements for the more expensive items, 3 courses and a bottle of wine. Not only good value but an excellent menu far away from the normal 'pub' food and the quality was outstanding. Staff were most pleasant, friendly and highly efficient. We felt really at home. The rooms were spotless and well appointed. The shower was disappointing but that was a minor irritation. Lovely views. This hotel fulfills a number of functions admirably. It is a pub if you want a drink when you get in at night, it's a quality restaurant so there is no need to drive anywhere looking for a meal and it's a comfortable place to sleep. Thoroughly recommend it.

Positives:
Food tasty. Improved presentation. A good effort to move away from overwhelming plates of stodge and overcooked veg.
Negatives :
Expensive.
In an evening, £16 at the Mustard and Punch buys 3 courses and half a bottle of wine. At its worst £17 at The Fountain buys a main course.
Trying to compete with much better restaurants in the locality but does not offer the ambience, quality or service. Still a pub at heart. Is it really necessary to have 'Stowells' printed on wine glasses? Is piped music really necessary. What about table cloths and cloth napkins. What about a smile and a the odd thank you?
The Fountain has had a reputation for good value albeit middle range food and good beer. The new owners will need buckets of confidence and cash if they are to succeed in turning The Fountain into a top quality restaurant.
