It's hard to imagine a more picturesque inn than The Red Lion in Cropredy outside Banbury. Outside it's all honey-coloured local stone walls and beautifully-crafted thatched roofs: the inside is equally attractive, with beams, log fires and rustic furnishings. The inn uses fresh local produce whenever possible in a range of well-prepared dishes that shine with simplicity. Start light with buffalo mozzarella pearls and sun-dried tomato salad with mint and olive pesto, then reward yourself with steak and Hook Norton beer shortcrust pie or local Dexter rump steak with horseradish cream and buttered crushed potatoes. Finish with Belgian waffle with Mars Bar chocolate sauce or organic Greek yoghurt and honey cheesecake. Feeling guilty? Set off on a towpath walk: the Red Lion is just a few moments away from Cropredy Lock on the Oxford Canal. This is a lovely old pub - good food and excellent value.
