If you like walking, cycling, fishing, golfing or bird watching, the Crown is ideally situated for exploring some of the best opportunities in and around the surrounding area. Set in the heart of the picturesque Clun Valley, approximately 3½ miles west of the historic town of Clun, the Crown provides an excellent holiday base from which to explore and discover the towns and villages that have evolved in tune with the landscape of the area. Nestled amidst the rolling South Shropshire Hills in an "Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty”, the Crown lies less than half a mile from the Offa's Dyke path, with The Shropshire Way, Jack Mytton Way and Kerry Ridgeway right on our doorstep. Also within easy driving distance are the Longmynd, the Stiperstones, Snowdonia, Brecon Beacons and Elan Valley reservoirs. Closer to home, on Newcastle’s doorstep, lies two contrasting Nature Reserves “Rhos Fiddle” to the west is a beautiful natural upland Moorland of some 70 acres and bog on a shale base that was formed over 400 million years ago, designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest. The variety of habitats support a diversity of species including hare, curlew, snipe, short-eared owl and mountain pansy whilst, to the east lies “Clunton Coppice”, an all season woodland that is dominated by sessile oak. Visit Gigrin Farm “Red Kite Feeding Station” at Rhayader and watch the red kites perform breathtaking feats of aerial piracy competing with buzzards and ravens for choice pickings. Gliding, Hang Gliding, Paragliding and balloon flights are very popular over the South Shropshire Hills primarily over the Longmynd, views across the Shropshire landscape are even more spectacular from the air. Balloon launches take place from a number of places in the local area, weather permitting.
