Baltasound is the main town on Unst, the most northerly of the Shetland Isles in Scotland; the town is situated at the head of the Balta Sound on the east coast of the isle.
Surrounded by a dramatic coast-line, cliffs, rocky shores, golden sand beaches and picturesque scenery Baltasound is a peaceful resort on the remote northern outpost, it is a popular tourist destination ideal for sailing, angling, walking and nature-watching, there are hotels and holiday accommodation, shops, a leisure centre and swimming pool.
Baltasound has a natural harbour with sheltered anchorage and was once a major herring port, the pier and marina are still used by fishing boats as well as pleasure crafts and Viking-inspired visitor attractions including the ‘Far Haaf’ a replica of a sixareen or six-oared Viking boat. The Unst Boat Haven has details of the distinctive wooden boats used by the Shetland fishermen during the 20th century.
Other attractions include the Valhalla Brewery the most northerly brewery in Britain and the Unst Heritage Centre which has displays and exhibits of the life, archaeology and geology on the isle.
Shetland ponies roam the island and in the surrounding sea live seals, porpoises and killer whales. The Hermaness National Nature Reserve is at the north end of Unst 5 miles from Baltasound and is home to over 100,000 nesting sea-birds.
