Chipping Norton is the highest town in Oxfordshire. Its history is steeped in the wool trade which made it a wealthy town. Many of the mediaeval buildings built as a result remain in the town centre, including the Guildhall. There are also many Georgian buildings. St Mary’s church dates from the 13th century and is a fine example of a ‘wool church’. It was enlarged by wealthy local wool merchants. A market was started in 1205, and is still held every Wednesday, along with the "Mop Fair" in September. Dominating the skyline is The Bliss Valley Tweed Mill, built in 1872. William Bliss is the town’s great benefactor who set up the town’s textile industry. The mill has now been converted into apartments and a leisure centre. Chipping Norton has a 217 auditorium theatre in Spring Street that hosts a programme of drama, dance, music, film, workshops and exhibitions. There is also a museum, opposite the neo-classical Town Hall steps, in the Co-Op Hall. There are many traditional pubs and restaurants in the town, as well as art galleries, book shops and antique shops. Two miles north of Chipping Norton are The Rollright Stones, a complex of megalithic monuments consisting of 3 separate sites. Jacobean Chastleton House is nearby, now owned by The National Trust.
