A small hamlet in the parish of Stamfordham, Northumberland near Berwick upon Tweed, lies Fenwick, only three miles from the Holy Island and the world famous heritage coastline. Fenwick lies alongside St Cuthberts Way, on which the monk St Cuthbert made his passage through Fenwick to the Holy Island. Fenwicks’ location meant it saw its fair share of skirmishes during the border raids from troublesome Scots. Its close proximity to Lindisfarne Castle, Bamburgh Castle and Chillingham Castle means it is an ideal base from which to explore the rich history of Northumberland and the Farne Islands. Within about a thirty minute drive are Alnwick Castle, Floors Castle, Ayton Castle and other historical buildings including the Mary Queen of Scots Visitor Centre, Haggerston Castle, Paxton House and of course, the Farne Islands. Popular with bird watchers is Budle Bay and Fenham Flats and around nineteen miles away is St.Abb’s Head Nature Reserve, home to colonies of guillemots, kittiwakes, fulmars, puffins and herring gulls with its sheer 300 feet high cliffs standing between rural farmland and the North Sea. A short distance away is Jedburgh and the Scottish border and to the southwest is of course, Newcastle upon Tyne making Fenwick ideal as a tourist destination.
