Tweedmouth is a village parish of the port and town of Berwick-upon-Tweed, lying on the southern bank at the mouth of the river Tweed, in Northumberland. It is connect to Berwick by an elegant bridge. In 1203 King John attempted to fortify Tweedmouth but was twice interrupted by the Scots. Berwick is England’s most northerly town, lying 3 miles south east of the Scottish border and had become Scotland’s leading seaport by the 13th century. Whilst the south bank of the Tweed has always been in England, Berwick was held alternatively by England and Scotland for centuries, changing hands around thirteen times before finally being surrendered to the English in 1482. It was not attached to Northumberland however until much later, in 1885 The inhabitants of Tweedmouth are primarily employed in agriculture and fishing. Salmon netting and sea fishing have always been important but salmon and grain became the port’s principal exports. Boatbuilding yards and foundries also provided employment. The famous tenants pipe factory was located in Tweedmouth, which operated between 1844 and 1918. Tweedmouth parish was part of the Berwick-upon-Tweed Poor Law Union, the Union Workhouse being located in Castlegate in Berwick. During the First and Second World Wars, children from Newcaste, Durham, Yorkshire, Cumberland and Westmorland were evacuated to rural parts of Northumberland, including Tweedmouth
