Althorp is a country estate and stately home situated in Northamptonshire, about five miles North West of the county town of Northampton. It has been the ancestral home of the Spencer family since the 16th century and is currently owned by Charles Spencer, 9th Earl Spencer. It has become better known recently as being where Lady Diana spent most of her childhood. It is also her last resting place. Diana's body was laid to rest on an island in the middle of a lake in the grounds of the Althorp estate. There is an exhibition housed at Althorp which celebrates the life of Lady Diana. Each year thousands of visitors come to honour the her life and to pay their respects. The estate is open to the public in the summer months from July to September. Other attractions in the area include a visit to The Althorp Coaching Inn, a traditional British Inn with 16th century décor including exposed beams and open fireplaces. Also recommended is Highgate House, now a hotel but originally a Coaching Inn. Highgate House has been developed in a sensitive fashion to retain its 17th century charm, whilst installing 21st century levels of comfort and facilities.
