Barnes is one of the prettiest and wealthiest areas in the capital, located in south-west London within one of the Thames's great loops. Here, restaurants and pubs enjoy beautiful views over the water, and customers at the Bull's Head can hear modern jazz played by world-class musicians every night. The old village atmosphere of Barnes lives on in its 100-acre common - a local nature reserve - and large pond, complete with ducks and geese. An important visitor attraction is the delightful WWT London Wetland Centre, whose lakes, ponds and pools, reeds and marshes are inhabited by many rare and endangered birds and animals. The Centre offers a viewing observatory, wildlife hides, and a kids' adventure area. Barnes has long associations with rugby and football, and rowing is a popular sport in these parts. Indeed, the annual Oxford and Cambridge boat race passes Barnes en route to the finish at neighbouring Mortlake. Culture vultures are well served by The Old Sorting Office, one of London's most exciting venues for fringe theatre and art exhibitions. Pop fans, finally, might visit the Marc Bolan shrine at a tree in Queen's Ride, where the singer was killed in a car crash in 1977.
