Crystal Palace is a residential area of south London named after a magnificent exhibition hall that once towered over the neighbourhood. The building, made of glass and iron, was originally constructed in Hyde Park to house the Great Exhibition of 1851 - an international celebration of art and industry. Three years after the exhibition finished, the palace was rebuilt (and extended) on Sydenham Hill, one of the highest points in London. It was surrounded by a Victorian pleasure ground where many events, including sports, were held. Today, Crystal Palace Park still exists, even though the grand hall, which was latterly home to an early TV company, has long gone, destroyed by fire in 1936. Some original features of the grounds remain, including the popular Dinosaur Park where visitors may stroll among life-size statues of prehistoric animals and reptiles. There's lots of fun for children, who especially enjoy the maze. The Bowl concert arena, a natural amphitheatre, continues to host outdoor entertainment. The park carries on a long sporting tradition - it's been most famous for athletics - with the establishment of the National Sports Centre, which boasts an Olympic-size swimming pool. Crystal Palace FC is based three miles away at Selhurst Park.
