Harrow is a unique part of north-west London, combining English tradition, history and charm with all the zest and convenience of a modern, multicultural community. Located near the boundary with Hertfordshire, it's probably best known for Harrow School, a prestigious boys' public school attended by seven future Prime Ministers including Winston Churchill. Stately school buildings line the High Street of Harrow on the Hill, an especially picturesque district of winding Victorian roads and olde worlde shops, pubs and tea rooms. Dominating the scene is the distinctive hilltop Church of St Mary's. Here, in the churchyard, the romantic poet Lord Byron reportedly enjoyed the views from the tombstone of a certain John Peachey, and a memorial to Byron now exists at the Peachey Stone. The area's past times are documented in the Harrow Museum, housed in a medieval estate in North Harrow. It brings together The Grade I-listed Headstone Manor, a 14th Century moated mansion once belonging to Henry VIII, a tithe barn, a smaller barn and a granary. Back in the present, Harrow offers contemporary shopping (with two major malls), stylish restaurants, a lively nightlife and hundreds of acres of meadow and woodland to the north of the borough.
