Islington is an up-tempo, up-market and vividly fashionable area of north London. Media professionals, entertainers and politicians have all set up home in this richly multicultural neighbourhood with its green squares, Georgian terraces and excellent eating, shopping and nightlife. Close to the West End, Islington is itself renowned for theatre, performed in dedicated pubs and in the internationally acknowledged Sadler's Wells and Almeida Theatre. Upper Street, the main thoroughfare, is a gourmet's dream, its restaurants offering a dizzying array of world cuisine. Here, too, are contemporary bars, boutiques and specialist shops, with Camden Passage, nearby, providing fine browsing for antiques lovers. The N1 Centre, meanwhile, caters for high-street shoppers and cinema-goers, and the bustling Chapel Market, with its colourful street stalls and pie, mash and eel shops, evokes a more traditional London atmosphere. Historic information is stored at the London Metropolitan Archives in Northampton Road, and Islington's many listed buildings include Union Chapel, a gothic church, concert venue and community facility. The Business Design Centre, a modern exhibition and conference complex, is also listed because it incorporates part of the old Royal Agricultural Hall. Former Islington residents include Sir Walter Raleigh, Vladimir Lenin, George Orwell - and Tony Blair.
