The picturesque and historic village of Beaulieu nestling on the bank of the Beaulieu River has delighted visitors through the centuries. It was here in 1204 that King John gave the area, known as Bellus Locus (Beautiful Place) to the Cistercian monks and it is now believed that a little way up the river, in 1100, King Rufus was killed with an arrow. Many of the present buildings are Georgian, built in red brick with attractive dormers. The gently sloping High Street has an amazing variety of stores including a delightful chocolate shop, patisserie and garden centre. Visitors will also find a number of fascinating and unusual craft and gift shops that are well worth exploring, their bow windows adding an old-world charm. Slow down for the donkeys and ponies as village life is very relaxed and there is a real air of community that warms and welcomes visitors from all over the world.
