Situated on the southern edge of the North York Moors National Park, the market town of Pickering is a good base for exploration of the Park, but there is plenty in the ancient market town itself to draw and entertain visitors. Pickering had a population of 6,846 at the last census, and it has the shopping and hospitality facilities expected of a small and very attractive country town. This is said to be a very old settlement, legendarily founded three centuries before the Romans came, but it was in the Norman era that the place became important. Pickering Castle, still an imposing building and not to be missed by visitors, was built in the late 11th century, a symbol of Norman power, but perhaps also constructed with an eye to defending the area against the still real threat of depredation by Scots and Norsemen. Pickering has been a royal possession since the times of William the Conqueror. There are aspects of old Pickering still to be seen in the town, particularly its market place and the church, which has very fine medieval wall paintings, rediscovered in the middle of the 19th century then in an act of official vandalism and philistinism painted over, only to be rediscovered later. Other private dwellings remain from those days, stone built and simple. The town has a proud history of non-conformism, Quaker founder George Fox preaching there in the 17th century and Methodist leader John Wesley in the 18th. This tradition developed a political aspect seen in support for the liberal party. As well as the castle and church Pickering has the Beck Isle Museum, reflecting life and work through the ages in Ryedale. Perhaps a more immediate draw for kids is the North York Moors Railway which starts in the town and goes as far as Grosmont – there is a stop at Goathland too, where much of Heartbeat is filmed, and in the summer some trains continue as far as Whitby on the coast. The scenery in the area, and the walking, is exceptional, with Ryedale to the south and Newton Dale to the north, and of course the North York Moors, which offer enough wide open space to satisfy those who really want to get away from it all.
