The tiny Nidderdale hamlet of Ramsgill on the banks of the River Nidd lies in some truly beautiful countryside. These days travellers will need to drive there (or for the hardier souls amongst us, walk), though when Angram reservoir was being built a light railway was put in by Bradford council – the reservoirs hereabouts supply that city - carrying passengers from 1907 to 1929, and freight until 1936, when it closed. Ramsgill stands at the northern end of Gouthwaite reservoir, a nature reserve and site of Special Scientific Interest that is a great draw for bird-watchers. Gouthwaite is also known for its fishing, though access is limited. There are wild brown trout aplenty here, and it is one of very few stillwaters in the UK with grayling. If Ramsgill, to borrow a phrase from Garrison Keillor, is not the middle of nowhere, you can see it from there. This is a really out of the way spot, three miles from the lovely Pateley Bridge, already a world apart itself. But as well as the handful of cottages and the pretty St Mary’s church there is The Yorke Arms, a foodie destination with characterful flagstoned bar, a magnet for gourmets and gourmands. There may not be a huge amount to keep visitors in Ramsgill, but it makes a good base for exploring Nidderdale and sites like “Yorkshire’s Little Switzerland” at Stean, and Brimham Rocks to the east of Pateley Bridge, and for those in Ripon and Harrogate on business it makes a great alternative place to spend a few nights.
