Leith is a town and port in Edinburgh in Scotland situated on the Firth of Forth, 2 miles north of the city centre. From the 12th century the Port of Leith exported coal, animal skins and wool becoming Edinburgh’s official port in 1329, from the early 17th century it was a major centre for whaling. Leith was created a burgh in 1636 before losing nearly two thirds of its population to the plague in1645. Dry docks were built in 1770 and shipbuilding was one of the main industries. Historically interesting features include Andrew Lamb’s House (1587), the 17th century Vaults of the Scotch Malt Whiskey Society, the Citadel Gate in Dock Street (1656), the Signal Tower (1686), the Corn Exchange (1809) Martello Tower (1809), Customs House (1812) and St. Thomas’s Church now the Sikh Temple (1843). Still a busy port with several docks, Leith has been recently developed with smart waterfront restaurants and bars giving it a mix of new and old, it is popular tourist destination, with hotels and a variety of holiday accommodation; it offers excellent shopping with a selection of shops and the large Ocean Terminal shopping centre with dock-side location, this is also the location of the major tourist attraction the Royal Yacht Britannia.
