Dorking is a thriving market town set in the beautiful Surrey Hills. The town is mentioned in the Domesday Book as the Manor or Dorchinges. The manor had been seized by William The Conquerer for his own use after he defeated the Saxon King Harold at the Battle of Hasting in 1066. Prior to that Dorking had been a small staging post established on Stane Street, the roman road that linked the important roman settlements at Chichester and London. In 1750 a turnpike was constructed between Brighton and London, this once again made Dorking an important staging post. The town benefited from its situation in a narrow chalk valley where many roads, paths and tracks met, and it quickly grew in importance. The steep sided valley is cut by the River Mole which runs to the north of the town. To the south is Leith Hill, the highest point in Southern England at 1000 feet. The North Downs and Surrey Hills dominate the area and can be seen from almost all parts of the Dorking. Britain's largest vineyard, Denbies Vineyard, sits on one of the banks of the River Mole just north of the town. The famous Box Hill is beyond the other bank. Box Hill has long been a popular destination with walkers and hikers as well being a very popular meeting place for motorcyclists. There are clay pits to the south of the town that were made famous by the discovery of the fossilised fish-eating dinosaur the Baryonyx Walkeri. This was a ‘new’ species to scientists when uncovered. The development of the modern town of Dorking has been relatively sympathetic to its original character. The town is famous for being home to a proliferation of antique dealers and the old White Horse Inn still dominates the High Street. A small open air shopping mall called St Martin’s Walk compliments the towns other main shopping thoroughfares on the High Street, South Street and West Street
