Many people will have heard of the popular TV archaeology programme “Time Team” and in 2003 the Time Team visited Oakamoor in Staffordshire in search of a medieval blast furnace. Oakamoor is close to Alton Towers, in a vale through which the River Churnet flows and its location provides relatively easy access to the Staffordshire Way and Moorlands. In the mid 19th century the Cheadle Copper and Brass Company was established here in Oakamoor and most of the local population were employed here, by the 1890’s the factory needed to expand and it was to nearby Froghall that the factory expanded. Today Oakamoor is surrounded by pleasant countryside making it an ideal location for those who wish to enjoy a tour of the area. Did the Time Team find a medieval blast furnace in their three day race against time? It didn’t reveal the location of the furnace but it did uncover an iron “bloom” – a lump of iron that in this instance proved that smelting had taken place here and surprisingly to an earlier period than the medieval period that they were seeking.
