Speke is to be found just to the South of Liverpool and today is best known for being home to John Lennon Airport, new retails parks and a commercial and industrial centre and not least of all Speke Hall, an important National Trust property and an excellent example of a Tudor Manor house. Speke may well have been a solution to the overcrowding of Liverpool but Speke was originally an agricultural based economy. Many people were moved here before, during and after the Second World War, originally into pre- fab buildings and then into the “Garden City” style of new development that was popular in this era. Whilst these were new homes they were not the communities and neighbourhoods that these people had left behind this in turn caused some social problems. Combined with the closure of car manufacturing plants in the area the future for Speke looked quite bleak. Today though Speke is changing for the better, the original Speke airport has expanded and continues to expand as well as being renamed John Lennon Airport, the new out of town retail parks and new housing together with trendy apartments are ensuring that Speke continue to thrive into the foreseeable future.
