Experimented with the preparation of rubber for waterproofing, produced a solid block of rubber. Took out patents for a number of devices including the first patent for vulcanization (1843). Worked in partnership with Charles Macintosh for a time.

Thomas Hancocks younger brother was Inventor Walter Hancock 1799-1852. First efficent steam carriage Omnibus and high pressure steam engine.
