Born 1790. Died 1855 - English navigator.

Served in the navy. Sent to the Arctic in 1810 to protect the whale fisheries. Commanded five expeditions to the Arctic between 1818 and 1827. Knighted in 1829. Made rear admiral in 1852 and governor of Greenwich Hospital (1853).
