Born 1908. Died 1985 - English film and stage actor.

Educated at Magdalene College, Cambridge. Taught modern languages before turning to acting. Was successful in classical roles such as Hamlet and Uncle Vanya. Film successes included The Lady Vanishes (1939), The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner (1962) and Nicholas and Alexandra (1971). Knighted in 1959. Became director of the Yvonne Arnaud Theatre at Guildford in 1962. His three daughters are all in the acting profession.
