Set Locations:
The opening scenes of Superman's pod landing were not in Kansas but in fact fields just outside Cambridge. Richard Donner directed this 1978 version of the classic DC Comics superhero story ‘Superman’. Christopher Reeve stars as the clean cut spandex clad crime fighter alongside a cast packed with star names, such as Gene Hackman, Margot Kidder, Marlon Brando and Glenn Ford. Reeve was initially turned down for the role of Superman because he was more Clark Kent than Superman. He was told he was too skinny, despite being perfect for the part in many other respects. Eventually, after a fruitless search for an actor who had the acting talents and the physique for the part, Reeve was offered the part on the condition that he wore a special muscle suit for the film. He refused, deciding instead to undertake a strict diet and training program to reach the necessary size for the film. During the pre production phase and the filming of Superman, Reeve increased his body weight by almost 25% and filled the role very well after all! Who knows, maybe he borrowed some spinach from Popeye? The sequel Superman II was actually being filmed alongside Superman, according to the wishes of director Donner. However, after a falling out with the studio, Superman II was eventually directed by someone else. The Richard Donner Cut was released separately later on. The location shots for Superman were mostly filmed in either California or New York City in the United States of America. However, a large part of the movie was shot at Pinewood Studios in the UK. The Albert R. Broccoli 007 Stage was used for this and a great many other very well known Hollywood Blockbusters, including a number of Bond movies. Pinewood Studios is situated at Iver Heath in Buckinghamshire. The county of Buckinghamshire is just to the North West of London. It contains a curious mix of rural idyll and city life. On the one hand there are canals offering relaxing walking and boating holiday opportunities; on the other you could be visiting one of the United Kingdom’s most modern city developments at Milton Keynes.  The history of Buckinghamshire dates back to at least Anglo Saxon times, and the its central location within England ensures that it has always featured in the history of the development of the United Kingdom. The central location also makes it an ideal base from which all other parts of the United Kingdom are accessible via the main motorway and railway networks.
