From the original six trees on a windswept hilltop to the delightful and imaginatively planted garden of today, Hyde Hall is the result of 40 years of dedication and inspiration.

Donated to the society in 1993, a programme of development and improvement has been put into place, in order that the garden best fulfil its role as a regional centre. Home to the National Plant Collection of Viburnum, the garden has also become well known for its’ superb collection of roses. Both modern and old fashioned roses are displayed here, together with a large number of climbers and ramblers, many of which are pruned and trained in interesting and unusual styles.

Other recent developments include the colour-themed herbaceous border and new plantings around the lower pond, among which are set a new oak gazebo. The highly acclaimed Dry Garden brings together decorative planting and the wise use of water with informed plant selection, and aims to display plants from a variety of arid areas, all of which are suitable for low rainfall gardens. The Hilltop garden is full of interest throughout the year, from the wide range of naturalised spring bulbs through to the late flowering tender perennials that provide a blaze of colour in autumn, complementing the autumn foliage and fruit of the many trees and shrubs.
