The village of Ilmington nestles on the northern edge of the Cotswolds, 8 miles south of Stratford-upon-Avon and 4 miles West of Shipton-on-Stour; it is the last village within the Cotswold Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (or the first if approached from the north!). The village lies in the folds of the Ilmington Downs - at 858 feet the highest point in Warwickshire - from which outstanding views over the Vale of Evesham towards Stratford can be enjoyed. First mentioned as "ylman dune" in a charter of 978 the village has grown to become one of the largest in the county, and among the many fine Cotswold limestone buildings are two village greens! The largest, the Upper Green, is home to a majestic sweet chestnut tree and village`s War Memorial; the Lower green is overlooked by the 16th century Howard Arms. In the centre of the village is the church of St.Mary`s dating from the mid-12th century, the top stage of the tower was added in the 15th C and the south porch is an early 16th C addition; the church was almost entirely rebuilt in 1846 and further repairs undertaken in 1811. There is no direct road access to the church which is reached by footpath that runs between the cottages. The Old Manor House is early to mid 16th century but has been much altered and enlarged; the Dower House to the north of the church has a front of two periods, the northern half being 16th century the other half is probably of the mid 17th century and the Red Lion pub dates from the 17th century. There is also a very fine 20th century house "Stonecrop" designed and built by Robert Harvey in the 1950`s the blends in well with the surrounding hills.
