| Events in Thornhill
Thornhill is a historical village in Dumfries and Galloway in southern Scotland situated 14 miles north of Dumfries on the River Nith. Thornhill village was planned and built in 1717 on the Queensberry Estate on the road linking Dumfries to Glasgow. This rural setting is a popular tourist destination surrounded by beautiful countryside and spectacular views over the Southerland Uplands. There are two hotels and a coaching inn all dating from the 1800’s and four churches from the 18th and 19th centuries. The wide village has red-sandstone Victorian villas and a tree-lined main street, the centre of the village is marked with the octagonal based Mercat Cross and is topped with the Duke of Buccleuch and Queensberry’s emblem of a winged horse. Thornhill has an 18-hole golf course and the area is ideal for walking, nature-watching and cycling. Bike-hire is available at Drumlanrig Castle, a 17th century turreted mansion once the ancient Douglas stronghold, now home to the Duke of Buccleuch and Queensberry and is open to the public. The castle is a grand renaissance building built by William Douglas the 1st duke of Queensberry and has many interesting features including art collections, French furniture and tapestries; there is a licensed restaurant, gift shop, children’s adventure playground, historical gardens and way-marked woodland walks and cycle routes on the estate.
