Joined the National Theatre, London in 1963 playing a number of title roles. Notable television appearances include The Singing Detective (1986) and Maigret (1992). Films include The Cook, The Thief, His Wife and Her Lover (1989), Sleepy Hollow (1999) and has more recently appeared as Dumbledore in the Harry Potter films. Knighted in 1998.
