Artistic director of Royal Shakespeare Company (1968-86). Instigated opening of two new theatres in Stratford upon Avon, The Other Place and The Swan. Directed Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical Cats (1984) & Starlight Express (1984), Les Miserables (1985), Chess (1986) and Aspects of Love (1989). Also directed at Glyndebourne and artistic director of National Theatre.
