First published work was Passages in the Life of Mrs Margaret Maitland (1849). Wrote almost a hundred novels. Notable works include The Railway Man and his Children (1891) and Sir Robert’s Fortune (1895). Produced biographies, literary histories, translations, travel books and an autobiography (1899).
