Born 1852. Died 1916 - Scottish chemist and Nobel Prize winner.

Studied classics and chemistry. Discovered argon in 1894. Using newly-discovered techniques for cooling and liquefying gases, he was able to separate the gases – neon, krypton, xenon and radon - from air. Had discovered helium a few years earlier. Awarded Nobel Prize for chemistry in 1894. Elected FRS in 1888, knighted in 1904.
