Amid the usual quality suspects – Julie Walters and Kenneth Branagh to name but two – and are you sure that’s right? –Simon Cowell and Ant and Dec – the 2010 Baftas recognized Britain’s most cutting sitcom, The Thick of It, the creation of Armando Iannucci. The show won best sitcom and acting gongs for Peter Capaldi and Rebecca Front. Iannucci previously helped Alan Partridge into this world; sent up TV news in On the Hour; and worked on the wonderful Mary Whitehouse Experience as a producer, for which he was already a hero. Too many sitcoms still recall Terry and June. Not Iannucci’s: his style is all movement and rapid fire dialogue; the bizarre alongside the banal; the profound with the profane; blink and you’ll miss something – who says this generation has a 30 second attention....
