Florence Green

Some 93 years after the end of WWI our (and it is thought the world’s) last veteran from that conflict, our last living link with the Great War, has died. Florence Green joined the Women’s Royal Air Force in September 1918, only a couple of months before the Armistice, serving as a steward at bases in Marham and Narborough in Norfolk. Mrs Green, born in Edmonton but a Norfolk resident since childhood, died in Kings Lynn on February 7, 12 days short of her 111th birthday. It seems somehow fitting that one of those less lauded, the support personnel who kept the fighters in the field, should have been the last veteran left alive, outliving the last combat veterans Harry Patch, Bill Stone and Henry Allingham who died in 2009, and Claude Choules ‘The Last of the Last,’ who followed them in 2011.
