Colin Montgomerie

Too often the almost man in majors, Colin Montgomerie has for what seems like forever been the utmost man of the Ryder Cup, never losing a singles match in his eight appearances. And now he has won the event as captain of the European team, his choice of the apparently nerveless Graham McDowell as the last player out on the unprecedented Monday proving vital. It was another nail-bitingly close contest, the Americans showing massive mental strength in their fight-back. At the very end Monty seemed barely capable of speech such was the tension, but through the rest of the battle he got the balance right, motivating his men when needed and leaving them to get on with it when not.
