Patrick Stewart

Sometimes the much-maligned honours system gets it right. Patrick Stewart – Sir Patrick Stewart as of January 31 2009 – is one of Britain’s best-loved and skilled actors, his craft honed during formative years at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School and with the Royal Shakespeare Company. Opposite David Tennant’s hyper-active and gurning Hamlet recently Stewart’s Claudius was still, powerful, and - rare this – sympathetic; his portrayal of Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek: the Next Generation was a major factor in that show’s success, converting established Trekkies. Beyond his profession he is an active supporter of Refuge, heavily involved at Huddersfield University, and on the political left through conviction not fashion. We just hope when the Queen approved his knighthood she said: “Make it so.”
