Wayne Rooney

To say Wayne Rooney is not everyones cup of Bovril is something of an understatement but all must laud his goal against Switzerland that finally broke Bobby Charltons England goal record. At an average of almost a goal every other game Rooney should be cheered during an era when player quality in the national is not at its highest. There will be those who compare Charlton and Rooney, especially off the pitch, and declare that therein lies the problem with the modern game. Others will point to the number of penalties that make up the 50. And still more may say that Charlton was a midfielder. But all you can try and do with a record is to break it and, well done Wayne, you have. And we suspect that the tam talisman may well go on to smash it and set a record that may not be beaten for another 45 years
