After searching for somewhere new to eat near Reading we came across the Castle. It's in a great location and the building is beautiful. Inside was not a let down although the bar area could be larger. It's definately a gastropub opting for a larger wine selection rather then ales/lagers. The wine was nice although possibly not worth the £5 per large glass. From what looked like an exciting menu we both ordered oxtail pie for £13 each. The pie came with horseradish mash in a tiny bowl with spiced red cabbage. It was a terrible meal. The pie contained mostly fat and very little meat and only tasted of pepper while the red cabbage just tasted of curry. We won't be going again and I suggest if you do go, don't have the oxtail pie. On the plus side the staff seemed very nice.

On our drive through the country side we came across "The Castle" in Hurst and decided it would be nice to have dinner there. It was placed idyllically across a Church and next to the bowling greens. The menu looked appealing and there was also space left in the restaurant. We choose to go for the dinner meal deal; 2 courses for £13.95 or 3 courses for £16.95. The food was truly delicious and we cannot fault the chef or the food in any way and we would gladly take friends and family to "The Castle" again, however the staff needs to be a lot more observant and trained. This was the only let down as we had to wait for nearly 25 minutes for our drinks and nearly the same time again to pay. We observed other guests who had arrived before us and only when they requested that they liked to place an order was that being taken - by the way this was after we had already finished our starters. The waitress then didn't know which table the starters belonged to and where to place desert cutlery. However once the food order was taken in arrived quickly and tasted delicious. We will definitely try the restaurant again, however hope that staff is better trained then.
