Sailing Clubs and Associations

Given that Britain is an island – or more accurately a lot of islands – it is not surprising that sailing is a sport at which we enjoy success, but more importantly a sport we simply enjoy (although Ellen MacArthur could sometimes sound happier).
Up and down the country, on the coast, the Norfolk Broads, on lakes and reservoirs, there are sailing clubs where every weekend - barring impossible conditions - members sail for pleasure or competition. The clubs range from the rather formally blazered yacht clubs of this world to groups sailing a few little dinghies for the joy of messing about in boats.
These clubs have produced some fine sailors over the years, with a golden age of late: at the Beijing Olympics names like Paul Goodison, Ian Percy, Andrew Simpson, and of course Ben Ainslie came to public attention, as did a word new to most of us, Yngling. Ainslie won gold at Beijing, Athens, and Sydney, opening his account with silver at Atlanta when still a teenager, and is one of Britain’s sporting greats who has overtaken Rodney Patterson as our most successful Olympic sailor. Surely he has power to add when Weymouth hosts the sailing at London 2012. There are plenty more at these clubs training and refining their skills with hopes of joining him there. We can but wish them fair winds.
