Basketball League Clubs

Though Basketball is one of the major sports not invented in Britain, we took to it extremely rapidly: James Naismith came up with the idea in Massachusetts in December 1891, and within at most 14 months it was being played in Birkenhead YMCA.
Great to watch and fun to play Basketball players don’t need much equipment to get started, just a pair of trainers, a basketball and a court to play on, and clubs provide the ball and the court.
Invented as an indoor game to provide exercise in the winter, Basketball is often equally at home in the outdoors, practised on open air courts where many kids get their first taste for the game. But club basketball is an indoor thing, whether it be an old boys’ team playing for fun on a Wednesday night or the big guns in the professional British Basketball League and the semi-pro English Basketball League.
Most of the players at that level will be well over 6’ tall, but Basketball - the roughest non-contact sport yet invented - is not just for giants: those of smaller stature can take heart from recalling that 5’ 3” Muggsy Bogues played in the NBA, a little guy in the big league. And handy though it would be, unlike His Airness Michael Jordan you don’t need to be able to slam dunk from take off at the free throw line. But if you can do that, do get in touch with your local club.
